Appearance:

The Afghan Hound has a unique look - from the dark, penetrating eyes, to the black nose on the pointed muzzle, to the way he holds his head with pride. He has topknot that is smooth and long. His ears are long with smooth flowing fur, as well. Although his tail has a curve at the tip, it will not curve so sharply that it rests on top of his back. The tail is also rather streamlined, never fluffy. The rest of the coat of the Afghan Hound mimics that of his ears and topknot – silky smooth and long, the only exception being his back, which is a bit shorter.

Temperament:

The Afghan Hound may seem indifferent upon a first meeting; however, those who open their homes to the breed will immediately see that they have a strong attachment to their families. Although he looks sophisticated and regal, he can be funny, and even goofy, if given the chance. Among people he does not know, he will be reserved. Although the Afghan Hound is not typically a loner, he is independent. His instincts tell him to hunt by sight, catch his prey, and then, kill it. He can be taught to be kind towards other dogs and gentle to children; however, he should always be supervised.

Health:

The Afghan Hound is a sensitive dog with a low tolerance for pain. Consequently, even a minor ailment, could be excruciatingly painful for him. Luckily, he is not predisposed to any medical conditions and is usually quite a healthy breed of dog, so painful symptoms can be kept to a minimum. As long as he is visits his veterinarian on a regular basis, receives a routine physical, and annual vaccinations, he should live a quality life. If the Afghan Hound does sustain a minor injury, he should seek veterinarian attention, in case he needs to be prescribed medication to help control the pain.

Maintenance:

The Afghan Hound can require some maintenance to keep him looking elegant. Owners should expect to spend several hours each week brushing his beautiful coat. To help keep his ears and topknot clean, he can wear a hood when he eats. Otherwise, they may drag in his food and water bowls, making them knot. The Afghan Hound is fast, fast, fast. He should never be off of his leash, unless he is in an area with a tall fence. However, since he does love running without his leash on, a dog park (if it is properly fenced) or a tennis court may be great places for him to run. He should be taken on a walk everyday for at least half an hour.
