Appearance:

The American Water Spaniel is a well-proportioned dog. His expression is one of awareness and self-confidence. His eyes are round and medium in size. In addition, they are widely spaced and beautifully colored from brown to hazel. The ears of the American Water Spaniel are long and broad and they seem to hang near his face ever so cutely. His muzzle is blunt and his lips are taut. A black or brown nose is most common and the nostrils are usually wide – all the better to smell his trail or prey. A great swimmer, his coat is designed to keep him warm and can have slight waves to it – although it rarely has curls.

Temperament:

The American Water Spaniel is quick to learn and loves to work. His most favorite activity is hunting – all kinds of hunting from duck to rabbit to pheasant to squirrel. He also loves being with his master and will try to alarm him if an intruder approaches the home. He is sensitive to tone of voice, so it is important that owners be firm but not severe when issuing a command. If he feels threatened, even by his owner, he could have aggressive tendencies. However, he does like to be affectionate and receive affection in return from his family. The American Water Spaniel will get along with other family pets, especially if socialized.

Health:

The American Water Spaniel has few hereditary issues. Skin irritations are common, so it is important to check him for burrs, thorns, ticks, fleas, and other irritants after he spends a few hours hunting. Besides skin conditions, he is a relatively healthy breed. He should visit his veterinarian as needed. He should also remain current with his vaccination schedule and receive any blood work as recommended by his veterinarian. If his teeth have tartar build-up, he should have them cleaned, as well. A high quality dog food will do wonders for the physique of the American Water Spaniel and may also reduce tartar build-up and potentially limit skin issues, too.

Maintenance:

The American Water Spaniel does not require much to maintain. His coat has an abundance of natural oils, so he should not be bathed too frequently. Doing so could strip him of his oils and dry out his fur and skin. In addition, over bathing can also cause him to become cold when swimming in frigid waters. He should be brushed a few times a week to keep him looking his best. The American Water Spaniel must be able to exercise every single day. If he does not receive an opportunity to stretch his legs he can become hyperactive and even develop a tendency to bark. Since he loves to swim, it is a great activity for him to burn some steam and remain a calm addition to the family.
