Appearance:

The Basenji is a delicate, sophisticated looking breed of dog. He has a wrinkly head that he carries with pride. He also has a neck that has a beautiful arch and a tail that is carried high and that has a graceful curl to it. He moves swiftly which allows him to be a natural hunter. His eyes are shaped like hazel or brown almonds and have darkly pigmented rums. The ears of the Basenji are quite small and stand upright. They are delicate to look at and to the touch. His coat is also delicate and his skin is very elastic.

Temperament:

The Basenji is a watchful, smart, determined and loving breed of dog. He can be quite skeptical of strangers, almost to the point of being aloof. His independence is on the verge of stubbornness. Consequently, he can be difficult for some owners; yet, he is so affectionate that it is easy to overlook that particular trait. He never barks – a unique characteristic for any dog - but he is still able to inform his families if a stranger has approached the house. The Basenji loves to curl up and stay warm, but will also play and befriend other animals in the house.

Health:

The Basenji is predisposed to a unique disorder called Fanconi Syndrome – a form of dystrophy of the kidney. However, a DNA test is currently available for this breed. In fact, all dogs should be tested for the condition, and results should be inspected before purchasing any Basenji. Progressive Retinal Atrophy – a disorder affecting the rods and cones of the eyes – and hip dysplasia are also quite common. By making sure that he does not jump from tall places or that he does not undergo extreme stress to his hip joints, even hip dysplasia can be controlled if it is caught early enough. However, in severe stages, it can cause complete immobility.

Maintenance:

The Basenji is a great dog for people who do not enjoy detailed grooming. He will typically keep himself clean and does not possess an odor common to most dogs. Because his fur is short, it is easy to brush and will never tangle or knot. He also does not release a lot of loose fur or dander, so those with allergies can enjoy this breed. The Basenji does need frequent exercise or else he will become bored and rowdy. However, he must not be let off of his leash because he will chase small animals or run into traffic. Consequently, it is best to take him on daily walks on his leash.
