Appearance:
A happy little dog, the Bichon Frise, is a ball of white fluff with a tail that is long and plumed. He carries his tail over his back and looks around with a gentle, yet questioning expression. His eyes are dark and round and have distinctive halos around the eyes that are also dark in color. His ears hang low and are long and feathered. He has a long neck that is gracefully arched. He carries his head with pride. The coat of the Bichon Frise is rough to the touch and almost curly. He has a soft, thick undercoat. In all, his coat is similar to a sponge in feel – a little rough but will always bounce back if touched.
Temperament:
If one word can be used to describe the Bichon Frise’s temperament, it is jolly. He is merry and playful. He loves to spend time with his family and is very affectionate with them. In fact, a Bichon Frise that is not cheerful may have deeper problems that could surface down the road. He is one of the friendliest breeds of dogs. However, he may be a bit watchful or reserved around people he does not know or in new situations. In all, he is a true extravert that is happiest when he is spending time with the people he loves and who love him in return.
Health:
One of the best ways to help insure that the Bichon Frise is healthy is to find and use the best veterinarians to care for him. Most quality veterinarians will recommend a vaccination schedule and inform owners of the importance of preventative medicines, such as heartworm medication. The Bichon Frise is prone to premature loss of his teeth and also to infections of his gums. Consequently, routine dental care is also mandatory. Other conditions that can affect his health include, skin allergies, allergies to fleas, infections of the bladder, infections of the ears, a slipping of the knee cap, and cataracts.
Maintenance:
The Bichon Frise requires a great deal of grooming. It is up to the owner whether a professional groomer should be used to keep him looking his best. His fur does grow quickly, so he does need frequent trimming. In addition, he should be brushed every day to keep his fur free from knots. Once a month, he should get a bath and have his coat be blown dry and trimmed. The Bichon Frise likes to go on a walk everyday. However, it is not mandatory. If he is able to play with his owner or another dog, that may suffice for his daily exercise.
