Appearance:

One of the most adorable breeds of dogs is the Clumber Spaniel with his wide, deep chest. He has a broad head that is nearly square in shape. His nose is either brown in color or matches the color of his skin. He has a wide muzzle that makes him an excellent retriever. His lips hang low over his jaw. He has beautiful amber colored eyes that are set deep into his skull. He has large ears that hang near his face and have significant feathering. The Clumber Spaniel also has feathering on his throat and tail. His neck is strong and thick. He has silken fur.

Temperament:

The temperament of the Clumber Spaniel is kind, sweet and all around pleasant. He is a rather bright dog that is usually very calm. He loves his family and is very happy playing with them or with other dogs. In fact, he gets along fabulously with other dogs – and cats too, especially if he is socialized as a puppy. The Clumber Spaniel usually has a favorite person that he considers to be his master, but will be kind to almost everyone. They are fine around children – and can be trusted to be gentle with them. The Clumber Spaniel is also very sensitive and has a long-lasting memory.

Health:

An athletic dog at heart, the Clumber Spaniel may also be prone to several kinds of health conditions. One of the most frequent and universal is hip dysplasia, a painful condition that can eventually leave him lame due to severe pain in his hip joints. A genetic test can verify whether hip dysplasia is in his heredity. Since the Clumber Spaniel is an energetic dog, he may also show signs of panosteitis (a disease that can cause lameness as a young dog). He is also predisposed to eye diseases such as cataracts as he gets older, much like humans. Finally, he could be prone to dry eyes and entroprion – a condition that causes his eye lid to roll but can be corrected with surgery.

Maintenance:

Maintaining the Clumber Spaniel is simple and the effort will pay off – as he is a beautiful breed of dog. He must be brushed on a regular basis. In addition, his coat must be trimmed. It is best to be shown by a professional groomer the proper way to trim him so that he can look his best. His ears must be cleaned with an ear cleanser and his eyes must be wiped so they do not collect debris or tear. The Clumber Spaniel is a very lively breed of dogs that loves to be taken for a walk every day. He also loves to retrieve and swim – both are great forms of exercise.
